Role Overview & Purpose:

The Benefits Manager is responsible for ensuring that the strategic value of a project or programme is clearly defined, effectively tracked, and ultimately realised. This role involves identifying, defining, planning, and monitoring measurable benefits that justify the investment. By implementing robust processes and maintaining close collaboration with stakeholders, the Benefits Manager plays a critical role in ensuring that projects deliver tangible value and contribute to strategic goals.

Benefit Identification:

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and define potential benefits aligned with organisational objectives.
  • Ensure benchmarking of baseline measurement of benefits is appropriate to measure change and recognise if the method of measurement will need to change during the lifecycle of a project.
  • Where financial benefits have been built into business cases for a project, ensure they can be traced back to origins (how has the figure been reached, who has provided it and who is owning the delivery).

Benefit Planning & Measurement:

  • Develop benefit realisation plans and integrate them into project delivery.
  • Monitor and advise on areas that may impact the expected benefits throughout the solutions design and implementation phases.
  • Protect the benefits aligned to the business case and ensure that they can be achieved and delivered as a result of the solution delivered by the project.
  • Where changes to the expected benefits are unavoidable or greater than expected, ensure that the benefits realisation plan is updated and document the changes through change control processes in the project, ensuring the business case remains valid.
  • Implement a framework to track and measure benefits throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Establish mechanisms to monitor progress against benefit targets.

Benefit Realisation

  • Ensure planned benefits are achieved by enabling the delivery and adoption of required systems, processes, and changes.
  • Work with key stakeholders to ensure ownership of the benefits, effective measurement of progress towards realising them and documenting progress.
  • Work to identify opportunities for additional benefits to be achieved during the project lifecycle and update benefits documentation to reflect them.
  • Analyse challenges, stakeholder expectations, and impacts on financial performance, operational efficiency, and satisfaction.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders to secure buy-in and promote active support.
  • Maintain ongoing engagement to ensure alignment and support for benefit delivery.

Reporting & Assurance:

  • Provide regular updates to senior management on benefit realisation progress.
  • Offer assurance that benefits remain achievable and are being tracked effectively.

Benefits Management & Framework:

  • Apply established principles, including SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Realistic, Time-bound), to guide benefit planning and delivery.

Data Analysis:

  • Analyse relevant data to identify trends, inform strategic decisions, and optimise

benefit outcomes.
